2024 Busan United Nations Week... Shouting for World Peace in Busan!

“Closer to Citizens, One Step Closer to 'Global Hub City Busan'!”

The city of Busan announced that it will hold 'UN Weeks in Busan' for 19 days from October 24 to November 11 in the Busan area.

'Busan UN Weeks' is one of Busan's representative global events held annually, and was launched in 2019 to promote Busan, home to the world's only UN Memorial Park, as an international peace city.

The Busan UN Week, which is celebrating its fifth year, will feature 21 different programs divided into the 'Pre-Booming Period', 'Appreciation Week (Oct. 24 to Oct. 31)', and 'Memorial Week (Nov. 1 to Nov. 11)' under the vision of 'Busan as a Global Hub City'.

In particular, this year's program will strengthen cooperation among eight related organizations*.

Busan's unique civic engagement programs that take advantage of each institution's strengths, such as the UNAMI Oryukdo Nam-gu tour, the UN Peace Road walkathon, introductions to ASEAN participating countries, and stories of Korean War heroes, will be expanded to spread awareness of the importance of world peace.

During the 'pre-boom period' that began in February, various events were held to spread the importance and value of peace and promote UN Week, such as ▲ the creation of a flag street for countries that participated in the UN Peace Special Zone in Nam-gu, ▲ an art exhibition (art fair) that exhibited artworks by children from Korea, Japan, China, and three other countries on the theme of peace, and ▲ the 26th UN Peace Festival.

In particular, in July, 'UNs', a group of diplomacy supporters selected and organized by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the city, planned and produced various promotional videos.

In September, activities were held to promote UN Week internationally, such as the 'Remember Roll Call' event, in which the names of war veterans were called out to honor them.

During the following 'Appreciation Week', starting with the 79th UN Day ceremony, the Lighting of the Peace Light and the Korean War Heroes' Story Season 3 were held to express gratitude to the veterans who fought in the Korean War and dedicated themselves to defending freedom.

Among them, 'Stories of Korean War Heroes', a mobile-based experiential mission program, will introduce 'Season 3' with new stories in response to the high response from future generations and families last year.

'Stories of Korean War Heroes' Season 3,' which contains historical stories of veterans' sacrifices and courage, will be held for free for 1,000 citizens every weekend until November 10 at the United Nations Memorial Park.

The Week of Remembrance, which honors the sacrifices of war veterans who gave their lives for peace, will include the World Peace Forum (Nov. 1), the UN PEACE ROAD Walk (Nov. 3), and the Turn Toward Busan, an international memorial ceremony for Korean War veterans, and will conclude the three-week-long Busan UN Week.

One of the most notable events this year is the Busan World Peace Forum, which will be held on November 1 at the Nurimaru APEC House.

Reflecting the increasingly tense global situation as wars and conflicts continue to rage, a special dialogue between global journalists and NGO staff will be held under the theme of 'A World Without War: Strategies for Global Peace and Cooperation' to bring the message of the importance of peace to Busan citizens.

Mayor Park Hyung-joon said, “Busan is a city protected by the spirit of the United Nations, a miraculous city that bloomed from the scars of war and is now on its way to becoming a global hub city, and is a living testament to history that shows how much international solidarity and efforts for peace can change everything.” “We will further expand the UN Week centered on the world's only UN Memorial Park and strengthen the branding of Busan as the ‘World Peace Center City’ so that future generations can feel the importance of peace and the need for international solidarity,” he added.
